Speaker: Dr. Fred Oswald, Rice University

Title: AI in Personnel Selection: Sticking to your Principles and Standards

Description: AI keeps marching ahead at a rapid clip, offering improvements and innovations that are increasingly being integrated into employment tests and the testing process. In this context, prominent concerns about construct relevance and bias repeatedly arise, as do broader concerns about the fairness of AI-based employment tests. Are we witnessing history repeating itself? Similar issues in employment testing have been of high concern for decades. They are featured and addressed in longstanding professional standards, such as the SIOP Principles and the AERA/APA/NCME Standards, and on the legal front, such as through the UGESP and EEOC recommendations. These documents become more important (not less), as testing 'goes AI' and departs from traditional methods of measurement and analyses. Similarly, the expertise of I-O psychologists is more relevant (not less) when creating AI-based employment tests that are responsibly implemented and effective as intended.

About the Speaker: Fred Oswald, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Rice University, researching personnel selection and educational testing, as well as how AI affects the workforce and workplace. He is an Associate Editor at the Journal of Applied Psychology and is incoming Editor of Psychological Methods. Currently, he chairs the Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI) at the National Academy of Sciences, and he advises the White House as a member of the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC).
